Girl, 4, Dies In House Fire In Montreal

Firefighters found a four-year-old girl hiding under her bed early Friday while a fire tore through her home in north Montreal.

She was in critical condition when she was rushed to hospital and died shortly after arriving. No one else was injured.

Firefighters arrived at the home around 6:30 a.m. The fire started in the basement of the three-storey building.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, but suggested an oven might be to blame.

Montreal's arson squad has taken over the case, which is protocol when a fire causes a death. However, police said there's no evidence the fire was deliberately set.

Police said it's still unknown if the home had smoke detectors or if the devices were working properly.

"Those are questions that will be answered during the investigation," police spokesman Dany Richer said.
