Earthquake Traps 18 At Rudna Mine In Poland

Eighteen miners are trapped underground at a Polish copper mine after an earthquake caused a tunnel collapse.

A spokesman for operator KGHM said the accident happened 600m (2,000ft) below ground at the Rudna mine, in the western region of Lower Silesia.

He said the rescue operation was "difficult because huge amounts of rocks have to be removed".

There is no contact with the trapped miners because the quake cut communication lines, the company added.

Poland has a large number of mines, many of which are located in the industrialised Silesia region, which is rich in mineral and natural resources.

In 2006, a gas explosion at a coal mine in the region claimed 23 lives.
