Shining Path Rebels Kidnap Peru Gas Workers

Suspected Shining Path rebels in Peru have kidnapped at least a dozen workers on a natural gas project, reports say.

They are demanding the release of captured rebel leader "Comrade Artemio" in return for the hostages, local media say.

The seized workers were involved in the Camisea natural gas development in the southern region of Cusco.
Artemio, one of the last leaders of the once-powerful Shining Path movement, was captured in February.
